Donnellan back but no Glynn for Tribe
JOHNNY Glynn is unlikely to rejoin the Galway hurling squad in the short term, despite transferring back to his home club Ardrahan in recent days.
Glynn’s intention is clearly to play for Ardrahan in this year’s Galway championship.
But it looks like he will remain out of reach for the Galway hurling management for the time being with plans to remain in New York where he has been since shortly after the 2015 All-Ireland final defeat to Kilkenny.
Glynn missed out on Galway’s 2016 season, opting instead to transfer to Tipperary in New York and play for Exiles in the Connacht Football Championship.
He was part of the team that narrowly lost to Roscommon, two points short of what would have been arguably the greatest upset in modern championship history.
Cyril Donnellan has been welcomed back to the Galway hurling squad this week however. Donnellan was one of a number of established players released at the beginning of the year but has now made his return ahead of this weekend’s clash with Limerick as both sides battle for second place in the Allianz HL Division 1B, behind already promoted Wexford.
Elsewhere, Monaghan have named an unchanged side from the one that saw off Roscommon in comfortable fashion last weekend for their Division 1 football clash with Donegal. That means there is no place in the starting line-up for veterans Vincent Corey and Stephen Gollogly, both of whom made their seasonal bows in the win over the Rossies.
There is plenty at stake in Ballyshannon. Both Monaghan and Donegal are joint top of the table on seven points along with Dublin and Tyrone as the race for the two final places heats up. Tyrone have made two changes to the team that started in their only defeat of the Allianz League – against Donegal in Ballybofey last Saturday night – as they prepare for the visit of Mayo to Healy Park on Sunday.
Goalkeeper Niall Morgan once again rotates with Michael O’Neill for the custodian’s position, while Pádraig Hampsey slots back into defence and ousts Cathal McShane.
Mickey Harte will also have the option of bringing back a number of U-21s into his squad after were beaten in midweek. They include David Mulgrew and the highly-rated Lee Brennan. The experiment of placing Seán Cavanagh and Matthew Donnelly in the fullforward line continues.
