Kenny refuses to close the door on return to Galway

CUALA’S All-Ireland winning manager Mattie Kenny has refused to rule out running for the Galway manager’s job in the future.

Having acted as coach when the Tribesmen reached the AllIreland final in 2012, Kenny was beaten to the manager’s role by current boss Micheál Donoghue in the winter of 2015. However, his stock has soared after helping Cuala become the first Dublin outfit to win an All-Ireland senior club hurling title.

“It’s a hypothetical question,” he replied, when asked if he’d still be interested in taking charge out west.

“It depends on where you are in your life at that period of time, where you are family-wise, work-wise, all these things have to be considered.

“To be involved at inter-county as a player or management, not alone management, is very time-consuming.

“If the opportunity did come it’s something you’d have to look at very seriously and see did it fit into your overall life plan.

“It’s not something I’m thinking about at the moment. It’s not something I have to think about.

“I won’t be wasting any time thinking about it, unless that opportunity came. It might never come again, but if it did come you’d have to see would it suit you at that stage in life.”

Kenny was on the sideline as Cuala returned to action in the Dublin league over the weekend. And he plans on sitting down with the club to discuss his future with them later this week.

“We’re sitting down this week to plan,” he said. “Last week, everyone was basking in the glory of winning. So there wasn’t any real discussion about going forward.

“I’m sitting down with the management team this week and we’re looking at how we move forward.”
