Coleman has strength to get back as good as ever – Quinn

NIALL QUINN believes that Seamus Coleman will need to use some of his own inspiration to recover from the double leg-break he sustained in Ireland’s World Cup qualifier against Wales.

The Ireland captain faces at least six months on the sidelines after Neil Taylor’s horror tackle in March.

Coleman said this week that he’s watched replays numerous times to come to terms with the “psychological effects” of the injury.

And, having had two serious cruciate knee ligament injuries during his own career, Quinn knows it’s that type of mental strength which is needed to get back on the pitch.

“Both of my injuries happened in the same way but I never looked back on replays of them. I was never brave enough to do that,” he said.

Having spent nearly a month at home in Ireland, Coleman has returned to Everton and has begun his rehab at their Finch Farm training complex.

Quinn (right) expects that the Donegal man will be back stronger than ever.

“Seamus is such a strong lad and I’m sure his mind is really geared into getting back. He’s an inspirational guy and he’s going to have to use some of that inspiration on himself now.”

The former Arsenal, Manchester City and Sunderland striker is certain that mental side of the recovery is the most important.

“My surgeon told me that it was all about my head and how determined I was to overcome the odds; how hard I worked at my rehab would determine when I got back,” Quinn said. “Seamus will have that confidence in abundance and that’s going to be the important thing now.” So what about Coleman’s return, whenever that may be? “It will be some occasion when Seamus pulls on an Ireland shirt again,” Quinn added. “He’s one of the most popular players we’ve ever had. If anyone ever deserves to get back and to be as good as he ever was, Seamus Coleman is the man.” Niall Quinn was speaking as he joined Dublin Bus and volunteers to celebrate the True Blue Community Spirit Awards
