Wootton craves more chances to shine

- Declan Rooney

FLYING winger Alex Wootton is hopeful of building on a bright season with the B&I Cup winning side and forcing his way into Rassie Erasmus’ plans in the coming weeks and months.

Wootton scored a memorable try as Peter Malone’s Munster A team claimed the B&I Cup title with victory over Jersey Reds last month, and he made a try-scoring return to the senior team in Treviso last weekend.

An injury to Ronan O’Mahony meant the winger was introduced earlier than expected in Italy, but he was happy with his involvement, and put it down to winning that silverware.

“For a young bunch of lads it’s very important because the season for a lot of boys could have finished just after Christmas,” said Wootton.

“But it was great to have the semi-final and final to push on through the season for some boys because they’d have been playing AIL so it’s definitely important and for the growth of players as well.

“It gives the team belief because if we can do that, we can push on as individuals, as a team and as co-players to get there so it’s very important for us.”

Wootton could well be involved again tomorrow as Munster welcome Connacht to Thomond Park, and he hopes to get another sniff of the try-line.

“If I get selected and score that would be fantastic but they will be raring to go. It’s always massive, the inter-pro game.

“And they beat us at home last year in Thomond Park so that is still kind of there. We really just need to concentrate on our jobs and us and execute our gameplan and I’m sure we’ll come out on top.”
