WE ARE THE CHOMP-IANS:

THE NEXT FOOD DUE A FASHIONABLE MAKEOVER

-

Potatoes

From much derided ‘spud’ to the fashion food of tomorrow? Potatoes are a complete meal in one serving and, with burgers and traditional battered chips, coming to the attention of hipsters, how long before potatoes are similarly elevated?

Soft drinks

The fetish for quirky Irish cultural ephemera will surely alight upon our indigenous soft drinks sooner or later. What odds on trendy restaurants serving TK lemonade or Tanora from a jam jar in the near future?

Crisp-like snacks

Upmarket crisps have been a thing for years now and foodies have lately been getting into wackily flavoured popcorn. So how long before Monster Munch, Meanies and sundry other snacks make an ironic comeback? You know it’s going to happen.

Cabbage

Kale is painfully fashionable – so what about a return to prominence for its dowdier cousin, cabbage? Irish people, it is true, have been scarred by decades of overexposure to boiled-to-bits heads of greenery. However, the rest of the world has no such hang-up – making a cabbage craze a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’.

Cauliflower

Cauliflower head is already being ground into a ‘rice substitute’ — making it perfect for paleo diets. Surely it can also be smashed into toast? It’s a brunch fad waiting to happen.
