Vintage, sustainable, and unique - House has all you need for home
CONTEMPORARY minimalist design is now “boring”, as vintage furniture and sustainable pieces are firmly in vogue.
Homeowners looking to go for that renovation they’ve been dreaming about for years, or searching to design from scratch, will descend on the RDS in Dublin this weekend for inspiration for new ideas.
Top designers, architects, artists, craftsmen, trend professionals, furniture and home improvement specialists will be on hand today and tomorrow to provide expert inspiration at Ireland’s interior design event, House.
Neptune by Global Village is showing off their collection of kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, living room, upholstery, garden and accessory products.
Karol O’Keefe, project manager of Neptune, said “contemporary design like minimal German kitchens is becoming boring”.
“We find people are looking for more sustainable products and pieces for their home rather than a classy German kitchen which would suddenly be out of fashion,” he told the Irish Independent.
“People are looking for unique, hand-made products and we also see a lot of young couples now looking to us with their first house,” he said.
Vintage pieces are also big on the agenda, with one company The Vintage Hub set up by friends Killian McNulty and Will Walsh, showing off their collection for the first time at House.
“Everything is vintage. All the pieces were made post-war era and brought in from the likes of the US and Scandanavia before we restore everything,” Killian said.
Studio furniture makers Zelouf and Bell have been making high-end furniture from Vicarstown in Co Laois for 25 years. Suzie Zelouf said their “labourintensive cabinets in particular have been popular in recent years.” “We want to have furniture in houses as if they’ve always been there. It’s a piece of furniture for life and that could even be passed through generations,” she said. As well as domestic commissions, the pair are also providing works for Ireland’s only double Michelin -star restaurant Patrick Guilbaud. Thirty years in business, the Orchard team are also in the RDS showing off their “absolutely huge” collaboration with Belgian design group Flamant.
Aisling Kelly, interior buyer and stylist with the Orchard, which is based in Celbridge, said they have “been just go, go, go” since the collaboration launched seven weeks ago.
Featuring outdoor garden tables, stylish stoneware and eclectic chairs, Aisling said they “have had an unbelievable response” to the collection. She said “this time of year is our peak time, especially for garden furniture and when the weather has been as good as it has been”. House 2017, which is an INM event, is open from 10am to 5pm today and tomorrow at the RDS in Ballsbridge, Dublin.
