Another gong for Leona
LEONA Maguire isn’t just a great golfer, she’s also top of the class academically.
The Co Cavan star (inset) headed to last week’s US Women’s Open with a new award when she was honoured with the 2017 Edith Cummings Munson Golf Award by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA).
The award is presented annually for Women’s Division I golf and goes to the student-athlete who is an upper classman and both a WGCA All-American Scholar and a WGCA All-America.
If more than one student-athlete qualifies, the student-athlete with the highest Grade Point Average receives the award.
Adonation of $5,000 is given from the Curtis & Edith Cummings Munson Foundation to the general scholarship fund of the recipient’s institution.
Maguire joins Blue Devil standout Amanda Blumenherst (2006) as the only golfers to win both the Edith Cummings Munson Golf Award and the WGCA Player of the Year in the same season. Named the WGCA and ANNIKA Award winner as National Player of the Year, Leona had eight top five finishes, including a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships, and never finished lower than sixth in 10 starts Maguire became the first twotime winner of the ANNIKA Award and is just the fifth player in WGCA history to win player of the year multiple times. A three-time WGCA All-American Scholar, Maguire holds a 3.934 cumulative grade-point average as a psychology major with the maximum a 4.000. She has been named to the Dean’s List at Duke in five of the six semesters. Maguire was also selected CoSIDA Academic All-America and ACC Women’s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2016-17.
