Pupils could be taught in rugby bar in September

- Ryan Nugent

A BAR inside a Wicklow rugby clubhouse is being considered as a temporary classroom for primary school pupils.

Greystones National Community School has been open less than two years and is currently operating totally within prefabs.

A swell in numbers at the school has led to the need for further prefab facilities, which will not be in place in time for September.

The school and Wicklow representatives are currently attempting to have two temporary Portakabin’s put in place.

However, if this cannot be achieved the school is considering using the shuttered bar, located within the halls of the rugby clubhouse.

Fianna Fáil TD Stephen Donnelly has hit out at the lack of progress in acquiring the Portakabins.

Unacceptable

“It is completely unacceptable that young children would have their classroom located in a bar,” he said.

“The need for the Portakabins has been known about for a year, and serious questions need to be asked regarding the planning for this being left so late.”

Meanwhile, Social Democrats councillor Jennifer Whitmore does not think it will come to having to use the bar.

Ms Whitmore said everything is being done for an alternative.

Planning permission is currently in process for a new school to be built – which is expected to take place next year.
