Gardaí make third arrest as they hunt for killer of mother-of-three

- Olivia Kelleher

GARDAÍ have arrested a man in connection with the murder of mother-of-three Nicola Collins, who was found dead at a flat on the northside of Cork city in March.

Ms Collins (38) died at the property on Popham’s Road, Farranree.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 3am on March 27.

Ms Collins (inset) suffered head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her death was treated as suspicious and gardaí subsequently upgraded their probe to a murder investigation.

Ms Collins was living at Clashduv Road, Togher, Co Cork, at the time of her death.

However, she was originally from Tralee, Co Kerry.

This is the third arrest in connection with her death.

A 44-year-old man was arrested in Limerick city earlier this year in connection with the case. A 42-year-old man was also previously detained.

Files were sent to the DPP in connection with the arrests.

The latest arrest, of a man in his 40s, occurred yesterday in Cork. He was detained at Mayfield garda station, on the northside of the city, under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Ms Collins’s funeral took place in her hometown of Tralee on April 4. At her requiem Mass, the parish priest of St Brendan’s, Fr Padraig Walsh, spoke of the “dreadful reality” of increased violence in Irish society.

Her sister Carly also told mourners of Nicola’s struggle with life, of her unfair share of suffering, her tendency to be hard on herself and her honesty and humour.

Ms Collins was survived by her parents Kay and Michael, and her three sons Nick, Adam and Michael. She was laid to rest at Rath Cemetery in Tralee.

Anyone with information is asked to contact gardaí at Mayfield on 021-4558510.
