Murray’s tune changes after Cork capture the big prize

-

HERE’S what Cork camogie manager Paudie Murray said after last Sunday’s All-Ireland final win over Kilkenny.

“We were written off by a lot of people. I think someone said the other day we stumbled into an All-Ireland final. I thought it was disrespectful to this great, great team.

“Obviously that person didn’t see us play during the group stages because I thought we played the best camogie this year and we would have been disappointed if we didn’t come away with a win.”

Now let’s check back on some of his comments during the season.

“We’re that bit behind Kilkenny the whole time so it’s important we use all these games to get better,” he said after the win over Limerick in June.

ATTITUDE

“Galway and Kilkenny were there to watch today and I’d say they went home happy with what they saw,” he said after Cork beat Offaly in July.

“We have a great never-say-die attitude and that’s what pulled us through. I don’t know did we deserve it really… looking back on it probably not. I’m worried going into the final at this stage facing Kilkenny. It probably won’t be a great contest. They play ten behind the ball so we’ve to do an awful lot better if we’ve to have any chance,” he said after the semi-final win over Galway.

Put all those quotes together and you get a particularly vivid example of the nonsense that’s spouted by some managers.

Murray admitted – for public consumption at least – that Cork were fortunate to beat Galway, yet when it’s pointed out in a discussion before the final that they struggled at times this season, he describes it as ‘disrespectful’.

A case of having it both ways, Paudie?
