Cyclist brings to six number killed on roads in three days

A CYCLIST who was killed following a collision with a tractor is the sixth person to die on our roads in less than a week.

The unnamed woman, in her 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene following the collision on the N28 Cork to Ringaskiddy road around 1pm yesterday.

She suffered serious injuries in the crash and a post mortem will take place at Cork University Hospital.

The driver of the tractor was not injured in the accident.

She was the 11th cyclist to be killed so far this year compared to the deaths of 10 cyclists in the whole of 2016.

Her death came just 48 hours after a day of carnage on the roads when five people died in two separate accidents.

Three generations of one family were killed following a crash in Mayo when Marcella Wilson, aged in her 40s, her mother Mary Ann Wilson, in her 70s, and her son Seán Wilson McGlynn (7), were killed following a collision with an articulated lorry on the N17 near Claremorris.

It’s understood the family were on their way to a hospital appointment in Galway after missing a bus in Castlebar. They were hoping to catch a bus from Claremorris when tragedy struck.

Funeral

A large number of mourners are expected to attend the funeral of the popular family from Belmullet, Co Mayo, tomorrow.

Marcella, who battled a brain tumour before her death, is survived by her children Amy, (16), Kelly (14), and Anthony (9).

The family will be removed to St Joseph’s Church in Binghamstown at 10pm tomorrow. Their funeral Mass will be held at the church at 1pm, followed by burial at the Cross Cemetery in Binghamstown.

Meanwhile, the American tourists who were killed en route to Blarney were on the holiday of a lifetime when their rented car collided with a lorry and two cars, his daughter has explained.

Diana Baker told how retired electrical engineer James Baker (62), from Columbia City, Indiana, had been planning his trip to Ireland for years and was “ridiculously excited” about it.

Mr Baker was a front seat passenger in the car, while Peggy Sue Adams (58), from Ohio, who was sitting in the back seat, died instantly in the crash on the Cork to Limerick road around 11am on Monday.

Mrs Adams’s husband Jack Adams was the driver, while Mr Baker’s wife Deborah was also a passenger.

Both were injured in the crash and are being treated at Cork University Hospital for their injuries.

Their families have flown from the US to be at their bedside.
