WHEAT AND GLUTEN FREE GRANOLA

- Katy McGuinness

If you prefer to avoid gluten and/or wheat, there are plenty of granola choices around.

The Paleo Foods Co Honey & Pecan Grain-free Granola, 340g, €7.50, 10/10

Our testers said they’d be happy to eat this one straight from the packet and did just that. Delicious, generous with the nuts and low in sugar. Gluten and wheat free. 585 calories and 8.6g of sugar per 100g.

The Foods of Athenry, Nutty Crunch Granola, 300g, €6.35, 9/10

Properly nutty, properly crunchy, pleasantly not-too-sweet, and Irish. Gluten and wheat free. 411 calories and 12.8g of sugar per 100g.

Lotts & Co Cacaonut Granola, no weight given, €6.95, 9/10.

Although made with gluten-free oats, this is not labelled gluten free. Full of pecans, coconut, unsulphured apricots, banana chips and cacao powder, this will appeal to grown-ups who would prefer to be eating the chocolate cereal they had when they were a child. Wheat free. No nutritional information.

Homespun Quinoa Crunch with Pecan & Raspberry, 275g, €5.99, 7/10

The quinoa is baked in coconut oil, which gives this take on granola a light, crunchy texture. Plenty of fruit, nuts and seeds, hints of cinnamon and vanilla, not too sweet. Gluten and wheat free. 473 calories and 14.8g of sugar per 100g.

Maria Lucia Bakes, Cashew, Almond & Cinnamon Granola 400g, €6.29, 6/10

Our testers said that this granola was perfectly pleasant, but rather dull compared to others. Only choose it if you really like cinnamon. Gluten and wheat free. 464 calories and 16g sugar per 100g.

Wicked Wholefoods, For The Love of Nuts Almond, Brazil, Cashew and Coconut Granola, 400g, €7.30, 5/10

Made in Clare, this granola has the highest sugar content of those we tested and the cinnamon is dominant. Our testers would have liked more nuts. Wheat free. 511 calories and 23.65g of sugar per 100g.
