Elderly man found dead at side of the road

GARDAÍ are appealing for information in relation to the death of an elderly man following an apparent road traffic collision.

The incident occurred at approximately 4pm yesterday in Co Monaghan. The body of the man, who was aged in his 80s, was discovered on the side of the road at Carnaveigh, Castleblaney.

A blue Opel Corsa was found crashed nearby and the driver, a woman in her 20s, was uninjured.

A garda spokesman said: “The body of the man has been removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital where a post mortem examination will take place and the road at the scene remains closed to facilitate an examination of the area by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.”

Following preliminary inquiries, the incident is being treated as a road traffic collision. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Castleblaney Garda Station on 042 9747900.

So far this year 120 people have been killed on Irish roads. Earlier this week Bernard Mongan (21) was killed after his car collided with another car at Carrowhuineagh, Dunmore, Co Galway.

Mr Mongan was due to get married next June, and has been described by his family as a “gentle giant”. His fiancée Chantelle McDonagh had been on a family holiday to Medjugorje when the tragic accident occurred. Mr Mongan’s funeral will take place at the Cathedral of the Assumption in Tuam tomorrow.

A passenger in the car has been released from hospital.
