MITCHELS MUST GO AGAIN AFTER KILLEEN EQUALISER

REIGNING Mayo champions Castlebar Mitchels will have to win a replay of their county SFC semi-final on Wednesday night after Jimmy Killeen rescued a draw for Garrymore by converting a late free from a tight angle.

Mitchels seemed in pole position after Danny Kirby found the net 20 seconds into the second half to put them 1-7 to 0-4 ahead.

Garrymore refused to buckle, though, and midway through the half Cathal Slatter bagged a goal after good work from Myles Fallon who then set up Mark Tierney to put the sides level.

David Stenson put Castlebar three in front with five to go, only for Garrymore to dig deep with a spirited late rally to earn a 1-11 to 1-11 draw.

Ballintubber await the winners of Wednesday’s replay thanks to an impressive 3-16 to 2-11 victory over Claremorris, in which Stephen O’Malley led the way with 2-5 from play.

Diarmuid O’Connor struck for an early ’Tubber goal before O’Malley grabbed his first in the 10th minute. He got a second before half-time to kill the game off as a contest as Claremorris trailed by 17 points (3-10 to 0-2) at the break.

Cillian O’Connor chipped in with five points and Alan Dillon also got on the scoresheet as Ballintubber were able to cruise to victory in the second half, despite conceding two late goals.

In Meath, holders Simonstown Gaels are back in another final after they overcame Wolfe Tones in an entertaining semi-final on Saturday.

Colm O’Rourke’s charges were slow to get going and trailed by three points after 25 minutes, but then both Nathan O’Brien and Mark McCabe found the net to give them a 3-4 to 1-6 interval lead.

Simonstown stayed on top after the break, but midway through the half Tones rallied and by the 59th minute just two points separated the sides. But a late breakaway goal from captain Pauric McKeever earned a 4-9 to 1-13 victory.

The champions will face Summerhill in the final after they finished strongly to edge out Gaeil Colmcille by 1-15 to 0-9.
