O’Shea set to be named ‘Rules’ captain

AIDAN O’SHEA looks set to be named as Irish captain for the forthcoming International Rules series against Australia.

O’Shea (right) is the clear frontrunner for the leadership role which will be announced at a press conference next week when the squad will also be finalised.

O’Shea, who had strong championship for Mayo after shaking off an early-season groin injury, is a committed International Rules player and has been part of the 2013, 2014 and 2015 squads.

Monaghan’s Conor McManus, who has also been part of the last three Irish squads, is expected to be named as vice-captain.

Bernard Brogan captained the Irish team in 2015 while Michael Murphy preceded him in 2014 and 2013.

Stephen Cluxton (2011), Steven McDonnell (2010), Seán Cavanagh

(2008), Kieran McGeeney (2006), Pádraic Joyce (2004 and 2005), Graham Canty (2003), Seamus Moynihan (2002), Anthony Tohill

(2001), Trevor Giles (2000) and John McDermott (1999 and 1998) have been the previous Irish captains since the series was relaunched 19 years ago after an eight-year break.

The squad is taking shape but may be low on representation from All-Ireland champions Dublin with Diarmuid Connolly, James McCarthy and Con O’Callaghan among those who have already pulled out.
