GARDAÍ are investigating the death of an elderly man whose body was found lying on the ground outside a house in Co Kerry last night.

Locals said the man was aged in his 70s and may have been homeless.

His body was discovered outside a house on Bóthar Buí, opposite the Austin Stack GAA stadium in Tralee. Gardaí had sealed off the area last night.

“The scene is being preserved. A post-mortem will take place to establish the cause of death,” said a Garda spokeswoman.

The man’s body was found lying near a supermarket trolley.

Tralee Labour councillor Terry O’Brien said: “This is a terribly sad incident.

“The hearts of the community go out to the family of this man.

“The body was found in an area which is being regenerated at the present time.”

The Garda spokeswoman said: “Gardaí in Tralee are investigating the sudden death of a man in his early 70s whose body was discovered this evening, at approximately 7.15pm at a house on Bóthar Buí, Tralee.

“The local coroner has been notified and the body remains at scene and the scene is preserved.

“A post-mortem will take place on Monday, and the results of the post-mortem will dictate the course of the investigation,” she added.

Thousands of people had been in the area during the day to attend the senior football county final being held at Austin Stack Stadium.
