Man killed and woman left badly injured in crash
A YOUNG man has died and a woman is in a serious condition in hospital following a single-vehicle car crash in Co Clare in the early hours of yesterday morning.
A silver coloured convertible hit a tree at Woodcock Hill, Meelick, off the old Limerick to Cratloe Road, at around 3.30am.
It is understood that two male passers-by arrived on the scene and called emergency services.
The male driver of the car, believed to be in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene, despite the best efforts of emergency services who administered CPR.
Last night, gardaí had yet to identify the driver whose body was taken to University Hospital Limerick for a post-mortem.
Sources said the passenger, a 25-year-old woman, was discovered semi-conscious at the scene.
She was rushed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick with serious head injuries.
Munster Regional Fire Control upon receiving a 999 alert at 3.35am, deployed five fire engines from Limerick and Shannon as well as a fire service vehicles. Two ambulances from Limerick and Tipperary, and gardaí, also responded to the alert.
Gardaí at Mayorstone Park in Limerick are investigating the crash.
A Garda statement said: “The male driver – unidentified at this stage – of the car was seriously injured and pronounced dead at the scene, his body has been removed to University Hospital Limerick.
“The female passenger was injured and taken to University Hospital Limerick injuries described as serious.”
