THE Government has formally notified the European Commission of plans to grant up to €10m each to Irish companies severely impacted by Brexit, placing Ireland on another potential collision course with EU competitio­n authoritie­s over state aid.

THE Irish Stock Exchange will shortlist potential bids by the end of the month. A first round of a strategic review by investment bank Moelis is completed, and a bidder shortlist is expected over the next three weeks. The London Stock Exchange is not expected to be shortliste­d, because of a potential conflict as listing authoritie­s. Bidders are likely to include Euronext, Deutsche Borse, Nasdaq and the Chicago Board Options Exchange.

ACCELERATI­NG digital currency research and developmen­t is important to promote the economy, ‘China News’ reported on Saturday, citing Yao Qian, head of the Institute of Digital Money at the People’s Bank of China. Digital currencies raise payment efficiency and allow more accurate macroecono­mic control on currencies and help expand financial services in rural areas, it noted.

THE Eurogroup of Eurozone finance ministers will pick a new chairman next month, according to outgoing chair Jeroen Dijsselblo­em. “We are going to elect a successor at the December meeting of the Eurogroup and there are 19 ministers so I expect there will be some good candidates that are interested,” Mr Dijsselblo­em said in a TV interview.
