Padraig Cribben, chief executive, Vintners Federation of Ireland (VFI) and VFI president Pat Crotty discuss the significance of the Irish pub and the Irish Pub Awards

-

Irish pubs are very much part of brand Ireland. Abroad our pubs are as famous as Riverdance, U2 or any other of our well known exports. Our pubs are also a major draw for tourists. Research shows that a visit to a pub was the number one item on a list of “must do” for tourists.

Our pubs are also a very integral part of the fabric of Irish society. They are a place to meet family and friends, enjoy great food, listen to music and be entertained or just spend quality time away from the stresses and strains of everyday life.

The pub offering has changed dramatically in the past decade. Publicans have responded to the growing trend towards casual dining and away from more formal evenings out. The quality and value of food available in pubs now surpasses any other offering and there is more food consumed outside the home in pubs than in any other outlet apart from institutional catering.

Entertainment and themed nights have become the norm. Everything from comedy to film nights to drama and Irish nights are part of a growing offering to keep the general public entertained and energised.

The revolution in craft beers and the new found interest in spirits such as gin and whiskey have added to the attraction of the pub and most publicans have responded by creating great theatre around these products.

Consumer expectations are continuously changing. Higher standards are demanded, different experiences are expected and the means of communication has been revolutionised. The pubs have responded to all of these in an embracing and positive manner. But they have also done it in a way that still retains that natural charm and welcome that has made the Irish pub what it has been for generations – an iconic institution.

The future of the Irish pub is not just safe; it is both appealing and exciting.
