GARDAÍ are appealing for witnesses after an elderly cyclist died following a collision with a car on a rural road.

The man (70) has not been identified as gardaí are yet to notify his next of kin. He is from Julianstown, Co Meath.

The accident happened yesterday at 11.30am on the R153 at Balrath, near the village of Kentstown, Co Meath.

The cyclist collided with a car driven by a woman in her 40s. She was not injured in the collision.

However, the man was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where he was later pronounced dead.

The road was closed for a time and the local coroner was notified.

Gardaí last night appealed for witnesses, especially anyone who was travelling on the R153 in Balrath between 11am and 11.30am yesterday, to contact them.

The man was the 12th cyclist killed on our roads so far this year.

Meanwhile, one passenger was killed and a driver is in serious condition in hospital following a collision between two cars in Co Kerry on Saturday.

The driver of the car, a man in his 50s, was injured in the collision and was rushed to hospital where his condition was listed as serious last night.

The driver and a passenger in the second car, a man and a woman both aged 20, were also injured.

They were also taken to University Hospital Kerry where they were listed in a stable condition.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

So far this year 132 people have been killed on Ireland’s roads.
