Kind and funny Irish football fans will always be in my heart

-

■ Football is more than just a sport. It is also the opportunity to meet new friends across national borders and get to know each other better.

I was in Copenhagen on Saturday to watch Denmark versus Ireland, with my son and two grandchildren.

We only met friendly, funny and lovely people from Ireland, and it was a fantastic experience. The police in Copenhagen say that there were no problems at all with the Irish football fans. Everyone’s behaviour was exemplary.

I live in another part of Denmark, Jutland, and had for a long time been looking forward to giving my family a good experience.

We got that. My 10-year-old grandson got a hug and a scarf from a fan from Ireland after the game.

I hope the Danish football fans in Dublin behave nicely, and that you will treat them fairly. The world has many problems, but the Irish football fans showed in Copenhagen that friendship goes across national borders.

Thanks to all the Irish who were in Copenhagen. You were amazing, and you represented your country in the best way.

Let the best team win tonight. If Ireland go to Russia, I will cross my fingers for the team. Irish football fans will always be in my heart. Thank you many times for giving my son, grandchildren and me a great experience.
