Benildus dig deep to share spoils with St Peter’s

LEINSTER P-P SCHOOLS SFC DUBLIN side St Benildus produced a stunning second-half comeback to salvage something from their first-round clash with holders St Peter’s in the Top Oil Br Bosco Cup yesterday, drawing 1-12 to 0-15.

Reigning Leinster champions St Peter’s were impressive early on and had a sharpshooter in Aaron Breen who bagged 0-5.

When the Wexford students held a six-point lead with 20 minutes to go they were in a strong position. However, the 2015/’16 champions from south Dublin rallied with Cian O’Rourke, Cormac Tobin, Steph Ahern and Cian Sullivan cutting the gap and earning a draw.

The Br Bosco Cup has moved from a straight knockout format to a round robin group phase, with six groups of three teams ensuring a minimum of two games.

Elsewhere, two Seamus Milner goals and another from Ciarán Casey helped Maynooth to a 3-13 to 1-6 win over St Fintan’s of Sutton.

Cian Dooner’s fisted first-half goal was crucial for St Mel’s of Longford as they raced into a 1-8 to 0-3 interval lead and held off an Ed Bennis-inspired Patrician Newbridge comeback to win by 1-12 to 0-12.

Three goals from super subs saw Good Counsel come from seven points down to draw their opening round clash with Naas CBS by 3-7 to 1-13 with Richie Foley getting two and Robert Cogley the heroes.

Earlier on, there was a draw between Coláiste Mhuire Mullingar and Dublin’s Coláiste Eoin (2-9 to 1-12), while a brilliant Killian Horgan solo goal was decisive for Knockbeg College who were 1-13 to 1-10 winners over St Pat’s of Navan.
