Bartra to build 221-bed nursing home in north Dublin

- John Mulligan

RICHARD Barrett’s Bartra Capital Property has acquired a site in Dublin for its third nursing home in or near the capital.

Bartra said that it has bought a one-hectare site in Artane, on the northside of the city, where it intends to build a 221-bed facility.

The site is a former Saint John of God secondary school and convent. It was put up for sale by the Sisters of St John of God in 2008 with a price tag of €3.5m. It’s located a short distance from Beaumont Hospital.

However, according to planning files, the order was still the owner of site when an application was made last year to develop the nursing home. The company that made the successful planning application for the nursing home – Beaumont Lodge Nursing Home Ltd – is owned by the Ardmore Care nursing home group, which was founded by John Martin.

However, the site will now be developed by Bartra Capital, which finalised the acquisition of the asset in October.

The company made the announcement as it began construction of a 123-bed nursing home at a 4.5-hectare site at Loughshinny, north Co Dublin.

Bartra also owns a 0.43-hectare site at Northwood in Santry, where it will develop a 118-bed nursing home. That site was also acquired this year. Yesterday’s sod-turning ceremony at Loughshinny was attended by Fine Gael TD Jim Daly, Minister of State at the Department of Heath with special responsibility for mental health and older people.

Independent TD Finian McGrath, who is Minister of State with special responsibility for disabilities, opposed the development of the nursing home in Artane, in support of local residents who objected to the scale of the plans. He said the project would represent an “over-development of the site” and that the nursing home would be “visually obtrusive” and out of character with the neighbourhood.

Bartra’s chief executive, Michael Flannery, said the firm is on target to deliver 1,000 nursing home beds by 2019, with planning for 462 of those secured. It wants to deliver 2,000 nursing home beds by 2020.

“Bartra is currently pursuing a number of other opportunities including the acquisition of further sites for development and the purchase of existing nursing homes,” he said. Richard Barrett was formerly behind Treasury Holdings.
