Britain helped bail us out... we must not let our neighbour down

-

■ In relation to Brexit, I would prefer if we were on the same side as the UK.

As pointed out by Ian Paisley Jr (independent.ie) in a snide way, Britain helped us out to the tune of £7bn (€7.9bn) or thereabouts when Fianna Fáil brought the country to its knees in 2008. Of course, for Ian junior’s information, this money will be paid back. Not so the billions scrounged from the UK annually by the six counties, a drain on a permanent basis on the UK economy. Ian and Co. are not as important to us in the Republic as England, Scotland and Wales, where Irish people have been welcomed and allowed the freedom of the UK for many a year, including yours truly. They are our family and we must not let them down. We will have Britain when we will not have Europe.

I do not care about the DUP, rather the business and farming community who work hard to support the likes of Ian and his mob. Neither do I support the actions of Sinn Féin, which is more interested in wrecking than building. They are two of a kind – God help them, a mirror image.

However, it is up to the voters of the six counties to use their common sense if they wish to gain the respect of the Republic and the UK.

As for the veto by our own Government on the UK, I certainly disagree with this action, the UK did help us out when we were in need, as did Sweden.

What did Europe do for us . . . it battered us financially and is still doing so, with more to come. No wonder the country cannot afford to house the homeless, or support our hospitals, or look after the poor and needy. The veto should be on the billions we are paying to Europe’s bondholders and not on our good neighbour Britain.
