Careers that matter
If you want to feel that at the end of every day you have made a real difference, then a career in the Civil and Public Service might be the right fit for you
The Public Appointments Service is the centralised provider of recruitment services for the Civil and Public Service, and operates the comprehensive recruitment website www.publicjobs.ie. The Public Appointments Service also provides recruitment services to Local Authorities, the Health Service Executive, An Garda Síochána and many other public bodies. The Civil Service exists as an independent, impartial body to serve the State and the people of Ireland, by carrying out the work of Government and delivering public services efficiently and effectively. It is vital to the economic and social life of Ireland, and the services delivered by the Public Service directly influence people’s lives.
The Public Service offers the possibility of diverse work opportunities with a range of expertise, interests and talents. New opportunities are opening up for talented and skilled emigrants to make the move back to Ireland. If you are home for Christmas and are tempted to make your return a permanent move, there is good news on the jobs front.
DIVERSE ROLES
So far this year, the Public Appointments Service has assigned more than 8,187 people to jobs in the Civil Service. The variety of career opportunities is reflected in the approximately 75,000 applications across 330 campaigns within Government departments, the Health Service Executive, Local Authorities and An Garda Síochána.
The Civil Service Graduate Development Programme, which is delivered in partnership with Think People Consulting, assigned more than 200 graduates last year to positions including Administrative Officer in the Civil Service, Graduate Opportunities in Local Government, Third Secretary with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Trainee Auditor with the Comptroller and Auditor General and Graduate Economist with the Irish Government Economic and Evaluation Service.
There is an enormous variety of roles across the public sector with people requirements in all areas over the past number of years. Given the generalist nature of the Civil Service, new skills and competencies in critical areas such as Human Resources, Finance and IT are highly sought after, thereby aligning specialist skills alongside core Civil Service skills to improve focus on outcomes and strengthen performance.
The Civil Service is actively managing the challenges faced with an ageing workforce, ensuring that each appointment draws on the widest possible pool of available talent, and providing more open development opportunities for all staff. Recruitment in these areas is underpinned by equality of opportunity, diversity and gender equality across the workforce to build a Civil Service which more closely reflects the society in which it works.
