Senior member of Garda to retire after just a month in job

THE most senior member of the PSNI to be seconded to the Garda is taking early retirement from the force – little over a month after taking up a new appointment.

Det Chief Supt Michael Daly has been a trailblazer for the PSNI in the Garda, and is the first member of the Northern Ireland force to reach that rank here. He is the second member of the Garda’s senior management team to quit this month, following Assistant Commissioner Eugene Corcoran, whose early retirement was revealed by the Irish Independent last month.

Det Chief Supt Daly was recently placed in charge of the Garda National Protective Services Bureau, which deals with sexual crime, includ- ing child abuse, child online exploitation, domestic abuse, sex offender management, missing persons, human trafficking and organised prostitution.

He has now told the Garda authorities that he is leaving in the new year to take up a post in the private sector in Belfast.

He became the first officer from the PSNI to be promoted into the Garda under new legislation aimed at improving experiences between the forces.

He joined the Garda in March 2015, was promoted to detective superintendent and appointed to the protective services bureau.

He was promoted to the rank of chief superintendent by the Policing Authority last July, and appointed to take charge of the Dublin East division, based at Dún Laoghaire, before being transferred to his current post.
