Runaway Wolves move 12 points clear

WOLVES opened up a 12-point lead at the top of the Championship with a commanding 3-0 win over Brentford at Molineux.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men made it 10 wins from their last 12 games thanks to second-half goals from Ruben Neves, Barry Douglas and Diogo Jota.

Brentford, who had gone into the game on the back of three successive victories, were kept in contention by goalkeeper Daniel Bentley before Neves gave Wolves a deserved lead in the 57th minute with his third goal of the season.

Douglas, who had been on target in Wolves’ 2-1 win at Bristol City last Saturday, doubled his side’s advantage two minutes later before Jota added a third 10 minutes from time with his 11th of the campaign.

It was a night to forget for Mick McCarthy as an astonishing comeback from Fulham saw them score four goals in seven secondhalf minutes to defeat 10-man Ipswich 4-1.

Birmingham City moved off the bottom of the table with a gritty and deserved 2-0 win at Reading – their first away success of the season.

Steve Cotterill’s side went ahead midway through the first half when Jacques Maghoma lashed the ball home from close range for his second goal in successive matches.

Striker Sam Gallagher added the second when he punished Reading on the counter-attack just past the hour mark.

Reading, now without a win in six games, mustered several chances throughout but lacked the finishing touch to seriously trouble Birmingham and now find themselves in 18th place – just four points off the relegation zone.
