ROCKWELL AND CHRISTIANS CRUISE THROUGH

ROCKWELL COLLEGE and Christian Brothers College progressed to the quarter-finals of the Munster Schools Junior Cup with convincing victories yesterday.

The Tipperary school were too strong for Glenstal and ran in four tries as they strolled to a 24-0 victory at UL, while CBC beat Ard Scoil Rís 25-3.

The writing was on the wall for Glenstal when Rockwell went in for their first try after just eight minutes, Sam Tarleton tearing through the Glenstal defence to begin a move that ended with Adam Maher darting through the smallest of gaps to score.

Michael Mulligan added the second try on 22 minutes, with Rory Collins adding the conversion, and then No 8 Adam Buttimer powered his way over to make it 17-0 before half-time.

Rockwell took their foot off the gas after the break but still managed to add a fourth try when tighthead prop Jack Heffernan burrowed over.

Having led only 5-3 at half-time despite having played with a strong wind at their backs, CBC upped their performance in the second half to run out worthy winners.

Christopher Guerin gave Ard Scoil a surprising lead when he converted a penalty after four minutes. But the Christians pack then began to get their game together and scrum-half Eoin Birchall found a gap to give his side a 5-3 lead.

Five minutes into the second half George Coomber extended Christians’ lead with a penalty.

Following a lineout; a drive by the Christians pack created a gap for Patrick O’Hara to score and Coomber converted.

It was 20-3 after 45 minutes when Birchall went through a gap for his second try. Ard Scoil were battling hard but O’Hara then added a fourth try for Christians.
