Ace your base

As the seasons change, so should your foundation. While summer is about natural, light formulas, winter means extra doses of hydration and long-lasting coverage. Here are this season’s best base buys.

-

If you have dry skin…

I often struggle with finding the right foundation during the colder months as my skin tends to become drier and duller and formulas that I loved during the summer months just won’t cut it. As soon as the temperature drops, switch to a hydrating base like Vichy Teint Ideal Illuminating Foundation, €22.50. Swapping your foundation for a moisture-rich formula like this will give dry skin an extra boost of hydration and a glowing finish. It contains vitamins C and E which will help improve your natural complexion, however its longlasting coverage was what really impressed me the most.

If you have oily skin…

There’s little more annoying than spotting yourself in a mirror after applying your make-up and noticing that your T-zone and chin are shining brightly. This is why longevity is incredibly important to anyone with oily skin, especially during the winter months when you’re faced with unpredictable weather and stuffy indoor heating. Look for oil-free, long-wear formulas with medium to full coverage. IsaDora Natural Matte

Oil-Free Foundation, €19.95, not only combats shine, it keeps the skin hydrated thanks to a blend of antioxidants and vitamin E. Side note: No matter what foundation you wear, clean skin is essential for controlling an oily complexion. Before applying your foundation, prep with an oilfree primer.

If you have combination skin…

When your skin has more than one concern — for example if you have an oily T-zone but have dry patches around the chin and nose — it can be tough to find a formula that works with your complexion rather than making your skin problems worse. Those with combination skin should avoid reaching for dewy, illuminating formulas since this skin type tends to glow on its own, with or without foundation. Instead, opt for a matte yet moisturising formula such as

Clarins Everlasting Compact Foundation, €38. Unlike most compacts, this feels incredibly light on the skin and is easy to blend, plus the matte formula goes the distance.
