The Spice Girls to reunite for £10m each

- Alice Vincent

IT’S the pop reunion they said would never happen, but the Spice Girls are reforming this year.

The quintet were spotted meeting yesterday for the first time since 2012.

The group haven’t worked on a project since their ill-fated ‘Viva Forever’ musical, and had long ruled out a return to the spotlight as a group. While Emma Bunton, Mel Brown and Geri Horner formed “Gem”, a trio, in 2016 to celebrate the Spice Girls’ 20th anniversary, the endeavour never quite got off the ground.

A statement from their publicist Jo Milloy on behalf of the group last night said: “We have enjoyed a wonderful afternoon catching-up and reminiscing about the amazing times we have spent together.

“We are always overwhelmed at how much interest there is across the whole world for The Spice Girls.

“The time now feels right to explore some incredible new opportunities together.

“We all agree that there are many exciting possibilities that will once again embrace the original essence of The Spice Girls, while reinforcing our message of female empowerment for future generations.”

Earlier on Friday members of the group shared photographs of their reunion.

Melanie Chisholm and Victoria Beckham had always been the most reluctant to reform the Spice Girls.

However, both are back on board for a string of new projects, with former manager Simon Fuller pulling the strings.

Reports suggest Beckham has been convinced by assurances that she won’t have to sing.

Beckham launched her eponymous fashion label in 2008, and while she is now considered among the fashion-design elite, the company suffered losses of £8.4m (€9.5m) last year. Yesterday, she was sharing the latest looks from her spring/summer 2018 collection on social media.

It is thought that the reunion could see each Spice Girl earning £10m (€11.3m) for their efforts – the same amount they reportedly accepted for ‘The Return of the Spice Girls’ tour in 2007, which took $107.2m (€86m) at the box office after 17 sold-out nights at the O2 arena in London.

Whether the reunion will result in a similar live spectacular remains to be seen. Instead, the group are said to be considering Chinese TV projects, a televised talent show, endorsement deals and a greatest hits compilation.
