Why an Irish fáilte for Farage?
■ According to media coverage, Nigel Farage seems to have got an Irish fáilte on the occasion of his recent visit to this country. This is despite the major negative consequences of what he represents.
Critics of Mr Farage’s visit are, therefore, at a loss to understand the motivation of those who support his message.
First of all, he is a prominent spokesperson for Brexit.
Brexit was a result of decades of anti-EU propaganda by much of the London media.
Brexit tore up a treaty signed by the UK with nearly 30 European democracies to co-operate in matters of mutual interest in a continent that was reduced to ruin by imperial/totalitarian conflicts over centuries.
Brexit also undermined the Good Friday Agreement (GFA) signed with this former colony.
Together with the visit of the British queen, the GFA was an attempt to draw a line under centuries of colonial conflict.
Br exit is therefore not solely anti international co-operation at European level but is also a continuation of the centuries of political and economic conflict with this former colony.
Mr Farage is one of the most prominent spokespersons for all of that.
That is why many in this country do not understand the virtually unchallenged fáilte given to him recently.
