UCD boss not sweating on availability of O’Callaghan

- John Fallon

UCD manager John Divilly said he will wait until the weekend to see if he has Dublin’s Con O’Callaghan for next week’s Sigerson Cup showdown with Ulster University.

O’Callaghan will line out for Cuala in the All-Ireland club hurling semi-final on Saturday but could make his first appearance of this year’s Sigerson next week.

“It all depends on how Cuala get on at the weekend and how Con feels himself. He is part of the panel, if he declares that he can play he can play. I’m not putting pressure on him.

“I won’t know what we have to pick from until Sunday night and there is no point in me worrying about it or ringing inter-county managers,” said Divilly.

He was pleased with the way his side led from start to finish at DCU, with the Kerry pair of Jack Barry and Barry O’Sullivan giving them midfield dominance.

They raced into a 0-7 to 0-0 lead after 14 minutes with Monaghan’s Conor McCarthy getting three points and Evan O’Carroll of Laois kicking two.

A goal from Roscommon forward Diarmuid Murtagh helped DCU reduce the gap to one, 0-8 to 1-4, by the break, but they never looked like catching UCD in the second half and played out the closing six minutes with 14 men after Ciaran Boylan picked up a second yellow card.
