Teenager is quizzed by gardaí after man (52) stabbed to death

- Conor Feehan

A MAN who was stabbed to death was in a relationship with a woman who had saved him from homelessness, the Irish Independent can reveal.

Bryan Cassidy (52) died in the front garden of a house on Buirg An Rí Walk, in Balgaddy, near Ronanstown, after being attacked at his home at 10.20pm.

It is believed he was stabbed several times following a dispute.

Neighbours in the quiet Co Dublin cul-de-sac said he had been living with his partner, Fiona Nolan, who used to work with the homeless.

“She met him on the streets in the city while she was doing soup runs. It’s an awful tragedy,” said one local resident.

“He has been around here now for three or four years now, he was a lovely man”

They said Ms Nolan was a great neighbour who would go out of her way to help people.

Local sources say there was an argument on the street a short time before Mr Cassidy was found slumped in a garden.

Mr Cassidy had received serious stab wounds and was pronounced dead a short time later at the scene.

Ms Nolan’s son Adam Nolan (19) later presented himself to gardaí in Lucan at around midnight and was arrested.

“I don’t think Fiona was there at the time,” said one local.

“Somebody said they heard shouting and then Bryan tried to get help next door, and then went to a second house but collapsed in the front garden.

“He was bleeding badly and had a wound to his neck. It’s just awful.

“Bryan was a gentleman,” they added.

“People did what they could for him and then the ambulance and fire brigade arrived.”

Mr Cassidy, who it is said was originally from the Finglas area, was pronounced dead at the scene and gardaí erected a large forensic tent over his body to preserve evidence.

The street was also sealed off and plastic sheeting was used to cover evidence on the footpath outside the house.

Members of the Garda Technical Bureau arrived at the scene yesterday morning and carried out a forensic examination.

They removed several bags of evidence and photographed details of the area where the crime was committed.

A Dublin city morgue ambulance then arrived at the scene, and Mr Cassidy’s body was removed for a post-mortem examination.

Neighbours said that the area is a quiet one, where there is no trouble.

“The children all mix and play on the street,” said one man. “It is usually quiet so it was some surprise to see the Garda cars and emergency services here.”

Information

Adam Nolan was last night still being detained and questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Under legislation he can be held for up to 24 hours before being charged or released.

Investigating gardaí are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, but are appealing for witnesses who may be able to help establish exactly what happened, to come forward.

They asked that witnesses who may have been in the area at the time of the incident, or have information, to contact them at Lucan garda station on 01-666 7382, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
