Garryowen aim to stay in hunt

GARRYOWEN will look to stay in contention in the Ulster Bank League Division 1A this weekend when they clash with Trinity in Dooradoyle tomorrow in a key game in their season.

The Limerick outfit are sixth in the top tier after their seventh win of the season last time out at home to runaway leaders Lansdowne and will look to continue that rich vein of form.

Garryowen held a 16-8 lead at half-time in that Round 12 tie at Dooradoyle. And tries from James McInerney and Liam Coombes helped seal an impressive 24-16 victory.

Cork Con are 11 points behind the league leaders and second in Division 1A. Young Munster are fifth with seven wins from their 13 games and they are one point clear of Garryowen.

Shannon fell off top spot in Division 1B last Saturday when they drew 15-15 away to Banbridge in Rifle Park. Shannon are second while UCC are eight points behind their Munster rivals in fourth. UL Bohemians are eighth and Dolphin are bottom of the table.

In Division 2A, Nenagh Ormond travel to take on Galwegians at Crowley Park this evening. Nenagh are third in the standings but 15 points behind leaders Malone. They have won eight of their 12 games, and are five points ahead of rivals Cashel in 2A.

Old Crescent remain top of Division 2B and they are now seven points clear of second-placed Rainey OB. Sunday’s Well are back in eighth, and will battle against relegation.

In the bottom tier, Thomond fell off the top last weekend when they lost 15-8 at new leaders Malahide in Estuary Road. Bruff are fifth in the table, while Midleton are six points further behind in seventh.
