Buccs face tough test at Trinity

BUCCANEERS are desperate for a win when they travel to take on Trinity at College Park tomorrow in league Division 1A.

The Athlone outfit are bottom of the standings but they are within touching distance of their opponents, and victory would be a massive boost to their survival claims.

Buccaneers are seven points adrift and lost 30-14 when these sides last met at Dubarry Park on October 28. But with 11 defeats from their 13 games this term they cannot afford another slip-up against their closest rivals.

In Division 2A, Galwegians will look to move clear of the relegation zone when they make the difficult journey to Dub Lane for a clash with Queen’s University.

The Galway city side secured a crucial 16-14 win against Nenagh Ormond in Crowley Park last Friday night. It was a huge win for Galwegians, and just their fourth of the season, as they moved ahead of Corinthians at the bottom of the standings.

Corinthians are now tenth and one point behind Galwegians ahead of a difficult home tie against second-placed Highfield at Corinthian Park on Saturday. Corinthians were hammered 44-10 at Cashel last time out, and a tenth loss this season would put them in big trouble.

Sligo are in a much more promising position in Division 2C where victory over Bective Rangers could put them back top of their league this weekend.

Sligo have led the way for much of the campaign but they did succumb to a poor 35-18 loss against Midleton in Round 13. However, Sligo have already defeated Bective Rangers 17-7 at Donnybrook this season and look primed for another success.
