A SUSPECT is due to appear in court today charged in connection with a stabbing that left a young man fighting for his life.

The victim, named locally as David Crawford (21), is in a critical condition in University Hospital Limerick after the alleged assault in Newcastle West, Co Limerick, on Saturday.

It is understood Mr Crawford, a father of one, was stabbed in the torso during a dispute.

A source confirmed a knife, which gardaí believe was used in the stabbing, was recovered.

The incident happened at Maiden Street, in the west Limerick town, at around 5pm.

The rear yard of a local property was sealed off and a “technical examination” of the yard was conducted.

A man in his late 20s, believed to be from Russia, was arrested and questioned by detectives.

Gardaí in Newcastle West garda station last night said they had charged a man in his 20s with assault. He was due to appear before Limerick District Court this morning.

One line of inquiry is that a row broke out after a personal dispute involving the children of both parties.

Footage from security cameras on Maiden Street and its surrounds has been collected by officers and house-to-house enquiries were last night continuing in the area.

Appealing for witnesses, gardaí said they were investigating a serious assault.

“One man [21 years] was removed to University Hospital Limerick and is in a critical condition.

“The scene is currently preserved,” a statement said.

Officers have appealed for anyone who was in the vicinity of the attack, or who can assist with the investigation, to contact Newcastle West station on 069 20650 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111.
