‘Tom cat’ O’Shea licks his wounds as he exits ‘DWTS’

- Kirsty Blake Knox

DRESSED like a dapper Macavity, ‘Breakfast Republic’s Bernard O’Shea became the fourth celebrity to be kicked off RTÉ’s ‘Dancing With The Stars’.

O’Shea and fellow contestant Erin McGregor found themselves in the first dance-off of the series after receiving the lowest number of public votes.

McGregor performed a paso doble to ‘Seven Nation Army’, while O’Shea danced the Viennese waltz to ‘What’s New, Pussycat?’ dressed like an enormous tom cat.

O’Shea’s feline routine was slightly reminiscent of that time George Galloway pretended to lap cream from the hands of actress Rula Lenska on ‘Celebrity Big Brother’.

This may have turned the judges, not to mention some viewers, off. But he said he had no regrets about the costumes and manic meowing.

“I don’t regret any of the dances, or costumes or anything I did on the show,” he said afterwards.

“If it was called ‘Having the Craic with The Stars’ I would have won it. It has been the most amazing experience, but I was never going to win. It was like trying to get a bullock to win the Grand National.”

O’Shea gave it his all but according to judge Julien Benson it was too much “belly-belly bum-bum and not enough tuck-tuck suck-suck”.

McGregor was unsure why she had ended up in the bottom two. “I just don’t know, but I went out and gave it my all and that’s all you can do,” she said.

The first dance-off of the season injected some much needed drama back into the show. Last week’s Switch-Up week had been a complete snooze-fest with no eliminations.

To up the ante, the show’s producers had shipped out a bus full of influencers and bloggers to Ardmore – who came straight from a very important fake tan luncheon.

‘Late Late Show’ host Ryan Tubridy also called into rehearsals earlier in the day and stressed he won’t be taking part in the show in season three on account of having two left feet.

And ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ champion Jay McGuinness had also flown over for the occasion.

Camogie star Anna Geary scored the highest points in the show’s history with a perfect 30 for her chirpy Charleston to ‘Bang Bang’.

Judge Loraine Barry said it was the performance of the night.

“It was on point all the way, for me this is the ‘razzle dazzle’ of the night,” she said.

RTÉ’s Evanne Ní Chuilinn, Jackie Hurley and Tony O’Donoghue were on hand to support their colleague Marty Morrissey, who did the foxtrot to ‘Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head’. “I’m so happy they’re here to support me – but I don’t know who’s minding the house in RTÉ,” Marty said.
