Let us unite to stop ruthless sell-off that ignores the weakest

-

■ I do not understand why the proposed selling-off of mortgages as loss-making investments should produce such furore in the corridors of power of Government or the national media.

We are part of a capitalist system that rewards those who scrabble to the top of the heap by dint of their ruthlessness, forsaking any social conscience or thought of the misery their actions cause as long as they dine in fine restaurants, while those whom they exploit are forced onto the doorsteps of those very restaurants to sleep and die of hypothermia at night.

What do they care, as long as they can ski in Val d’Isère or waterski in Barbados?

We are the chaff blown by them to the wind, enabling them to steal the kernel of our dreams, won by the hard sweat of our labours.

We are truly back to the viciousness of the lock-outs of the start of the last century.

How many deaths through living rough and through suicide, how much misery through not being able to give our children hope for the future, will it take to convince us this system must come to an end? And who will achieve this if not us?

Our nation prides itself in being one of the last bastions of Christianity.

Our call must be to not rely on self-serving politicians with fancy words to patronise us.

If we believe in living in a world that is fair, that cares for all of us, that protects every member of our society, we must confront the centres of power, we must organise ourselves so that we have a voice they have to listen to.

The measure of a civilised society is determined by how the weakest is treated.

Each one of us has a voice. Use it actively in every forum.

If we do not, we will fail the most basic examination of our humanity. George Dalzell
