More stars of future revealed in the countdown to Geneva show

- Eddie Cunningham Motoring Editor

THE Geneva Show is nearly upon us and the reveals continue to flow in. Will there be anything left that’s new on the day?

Yesterday, Hyundai gave the first look and details of their second electric vehicle, the Kona SUV.

They claim it can cover 300km to 467km on a single charge, depending on which battery option you decide on.

They say the lithium-ion battery pack is integrated into the platform in such a way that interior space, including luggage room, isn’t affected.

Charging time can take as little as 54mins (to 80pc) from a 100kW fast charger or 9hr 40min from a standard AC source. In the case of the less powerful battery, the standard AC charge takes 6hr 10min.

Visually, it’s much like the conventional Kona, except it has a closed grille and no exhausts. It is expected here for the 182-reg period.

It was revealed as Nissan announced prices and spec for their new LEAF (see details on Page 2).

Also making its debut at Geneva will be the next-generation Toyota Auris. At this stage, they’re not saying if there will be a diesel on the Irish market. I’m told it will be a 191-reg car for Irish buyers.

KIA’s underrated Optima will be shown too – there are design tweaks and new engines.

There will be the new 1.6-litre CRDi diesel and a 1.6-litre turbo petrol. They’re talking third-quarter arrival, possible later.

Peugeot say their sharply-styled new 508 family/fleet motor is an endof year arrival for 191-reg. It will be hugely interesting to see how it fares at a time when people seem to only want crossovers and SUVs.

Speaking of which, what about the compact UX from Lexus (pictured)?

Also looking forward to seeing the cabrio version of Volkswagen’s T-Roc. The concept looks stunning. But it will be 2020 before we see it in the flesh.
