FOR THE ARCHITECTURE LOVER: St Patrick’s Cathedral I recently went on a trip to Armagh, and St Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral was a particular favourite location of mine. I booked a guided tour of the Cathedral and I was impressed with the architecture of the holy place with its stained glass, tile work, and marble. Its commanding position on top of a hill is an ideal place to look out over Armagh City and see its sister church on an opposing hill, the Church of Ireland’s St Patrick’s Cathedral. The churches are bonded in their architecture and history. When entering the church, marble sculptures of angels and saints look down on all that arrives. Stunning Celtic artwork mosaics cover the walls, floors and ceiling and the stained glass windows, depicting religious scenes, made me feel connected to the beauty of the faith. My guide taught me about the Cathedral’s history and its connection with St Patrick. His original church was on this very site. A heartwarming tale was told of how St Patrick saved a young fawn from being eaten by carrying it on his shoulders and reuniting it with its mother on the site St Patrick’s Cathedral now stands. This is a place for anyone interested in history, architecture or anyone who simply wants a fascinating day out. Guided tours can be booked for single people, pairs or groups of people. The Cathedral is also open for anyone to explore and take their own personal tour. Guided tours £2 per person / self-guided tours £2 per person For more information and to book a tour, visit www.armaghparish.net
