Legends in scoring form for Toulon

- Declan Rooney

TRIES in each half from JP Pietersen and Ma’a Nonu, as well as the skilled boot of Jonathan Wisniewski, saw Toulon claim a third Top 14 win in-a-row and climb into fourth in the standings.

Munster welcome the three-time Champions

Cup winners to Thomond Park on Saturday, March 31 (kick-off 3.15pm) in the European quarter-final and after they scraped through to the knock-out stages with a last-round win over Scarlets, the Fabien Galthié-coached side have found some great form during the Six Nations window.

It didn’t look great for the French heavyweights in the opening half an hour as home side La Rochelle bagged two tries from Tawera Kerr-Barlow and Pierre Bougarit, but a couple of Wisniewski penalties kept the Reds in touch. Despite Pierre Aguillon crossing for a third La Rochelle try before the interval, Toulon only trailed by 17-14 at half-time.

And the second half belonged to Toulon as an Anthony Belleau penalty was added to by former All Black centre Nonu, while Belleau finished off the job in the closing stages.

In a very compressed division, just 10 points separate the top six teams, while just four points are between the teams in sixth to second.

Tomorrow Toulon face another tricky away trip to face Lyon, while Munster’s possible semifinal opponent Racing 92 host Brive, while another, Clermont, take on La Rochelle.
