JVG: I see massive potential in Sam
MUNSTER coach Johann van Graan says he expects centre Sam Arnold to build a bright future for himself in the Munster shirt after another powerful showing at Irish Independent Park last week.
Arnold was impressive alongside Dan Goggin as Munster soundly beat Glasgow Warriors last weekend, and his reward for another stout showing was a call-up to the Ireland training squad at Carton House this week.
Injury to Chris Farrell could well prompt a longer spell with Ireland for the centre, but Van Graan hopes to see him shine for Munster on a regular basis.
“Rory Scannell is back in camp with us this week and Sam Arnold has gone to Irish camp for two days but he will be back and available for selection on the weekend,” said Van Graan.
“He has been in Irish camp a few weeks ago. I thought he was really good on Friday evening, not only with ball in hand, but his abrasive defence, the way he attacks the line and makes turnover tackles and he makes players around him feel good.”
Arnold made his move to Munster from Ulster in the summer of 2016, but his initial progress was hampered by injury.
This season he has tasted his first real run in the first team and he has claimed five tries from 10 appearances. His new coach says he sees real potential in the 21-yearold.
“He creates big moments. A few weeks back I said it to Sammy that I see some real talent in his game, he is hungry to learn and hungry to improve.
“He just works. Every time he does something wrong he just wants to improve on that. I see a bright future for him.
“Irish centres are currently very special. Look at Chris Farrell’s performance last weekend. I’m very glad for him – a man-of-the-match performance.”
