Selfish morons who left taps running should be named and shamed – I couldn’t wash for two days

- Paul Melia

NOT everybody is sound in a national crisis. I haven’t washed in two days due to stupid people running their taps. Not everyone helps out in an emergency.

We have all heard stories over recent days of neighbours checking in on each other, taxi drivers going beyond the call of duty and getting people home, and the emergency services, medics and countless others who have kept the country moving and essentials running.

But we’ve heard less about the selfish morons who have done nothing to help ease the burden across an awful few days.

I refer to those who insisted on leaving their taps running to prevent their pipes from freezing, thereby depriving their neighbours of water.

I have a personal interest in this. In Celbridge, Co Kildare, a pipe ruptured on Friday. Irish Water and the council had it repaired on Saturday, but no water was flowing to homes in large parts of the town, including mine.

A trickle from the cold kitchen tap, but nothing in bathrooms and nothing to flush toilets. No hot water in the shower for children to jump into after a day playing in the snow.

W hy?

Because others were keeping their taps running to prevent their pipes from freezing, despite the thaw setting in and temperatures being at 2C.

This meant reservoirs couldn’t fill and thus hundreds of others were deprived of any water for almost two days.

I hope they spring a leak, and are hit with an expensive repair bill. Irish Water should name and shame them, and cut them off next time there’s a crisis.

Water wasn’t the only issue. Special mention too to the driver of the 4x4 sliding around the icy road, filming their journey on a mobile phone. Because no one else in the country experienced snow and icy road conditions over recent days. What a wonderful and unique video clip that will make.

All us pedestrians, small children and all, really appreciated that effort to avoid causing unnecessary risk to us all in sub-zero temperatures. What a moron.

A shout-out too to the drivers who not only drove too fast on barely cleared roads, but made special effort to drive through slush and puddles.

And well done to the man with the very small child on his shoulders as he trudged through the snow. The toddler’s woolly hat would definitely have prevented brain injury in the event that silly daddy slipped.

And one more. The animal lovers only too happy to let little Rover take a crap in the snow, but who were too witless to pick it up.

Little Rover is a dumb animal. What’s their excuse?
