Purcell set for college transfer
PORTMARNOCK international Conor Purcell is set to move college next year and sign up for South Carolina.
The 2016 South of Ireland champion (20) is now in his second year with the Charlotte 49ers but looks set to move 90 miles south to the University of South Carolina in Colombia.
The South Carolina Gamecocks have produced tour players such as Florian Fritsch and James Morrison in Europe or Kyle Thompson, Brett Quigley, Carl Paulson and Wesley Bryan on the PGA Tour.
Purcell is enjoying life in Charlotte and this week finished sixth in the Tiger Invitational at Grand National Lake Course in Alabama.
The Charlotte 49ers were seventh behind team winners Auburn, but Purcell was the best performer for his side, finishing five behind Maryland’s David Kocher in a tie for sixth on sixunder-par.
It was Purcell’s third top 10 finish of the season, but he is still looking for his first US win with his best result a runner-up finish in last term’s Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
Carton House’s Marc Boucher is also with the 49ers, recording a share of fourth in the Queens Invitational in September.
