Demesne event in Galway

-

LIKE so many other grand estate houses all over the country, Dunmore House in north Co Galway is now a ruin surrounded by a golf course.

It’s quite a splendid ruin as well, issuing strong hints of a once glorious, 18th-century bow-ended three-storey manor built of limestone.

The golf course, which now occupies the former Dunmore House demesne, is something of a curiosity as well. Designed by Eddie Hackett and opened in 1998, it’s a nine-hole course with the local Dunmore McHales GAA pitch cutting through it. You could nearly have a change of heart on the fairway and opt for a game of football instead without losing stride.

Adjacent to the golf course, and a few hundred metres from the GAA grounds, is this detached, newly-built house on the Dublin Road, half a kilometre from the village of Dunmore.

This is an expensively finished and fitted house, with a sizeable floor area of 2,725 sq ft and prettily landscaped grounds featuring a stone patio, lawn and mature shrubbery.

Inside the front door is a doubleheight entrance hall with an openstring timber staircase to a gallery landing above.

To the left here is a living room with a marble fireplace and to the right is an extra reception room by way of a playroom or guest bedroom.

The eat-in kitchen is a single-storey room about 26ft by 18ft with five skylights in the vaulted ceiling and glass doors to the garden. There’s also a TV room on the ground floor.

The four main bedrooms (two ensuite) are upstairs around a landing with enough room for a couch and coffee table.

The grounds also include a detached garage measuring some 20ft by 18ft — easily enough space for your golfing and football gear.

The agent is Sherry FitzGerald Mannion in Tuam (093) 26622 and the asking price is €325,000.
