Bright sparks go sumo in schools’ robot war

- Breda Heffernan

MORE than 100 primary school pupils battled it out with their self-designed sumo wrestling robots in Limerick at the weekend.

The fourth annual Analog Devices Primary School Robotics competition saw a team from Killoughteen National School emerge the winners.

Teams of 10- to 12-yearolds from 30 schools across the city and county designed and built their own robots before pitting them against each other in a sumo wrestling style competition.

The aim of the popular competition is to promote science, technology, engineering and maths amongst primary schools students and to encourage team work, learning and creativity in a fun environment.
