“Sorry 14, I didn’t know you were catching it.”

Wayne Barnes is a bit quick to whistle, much to Ireland’s advantage as Blair Kinghorn was away down the right wing.

“Which way are you going, Johnny? You don’t know yet? Okay. Well just let me know so I can get out of your way.”

Given that Sexton had just berated Barnes for missing a blatant knock on, the Ireland out-half barely even looked at the ref.

“Mate, there is a head injury, I have to stop the game.” Barnes and Sexton’s running conversation continues.

“I’m not going to rush an injury. I didn’t rush Reidy or your HIAs.”

Scotland want Barnes to hurry Ireland on but the English official is quick to remind them that he did the same for them.

“You okay on your side of the scrum? It’s a good contest.”

A hallmark of Barnes’ performance was his constant chat with the players and on this occasion he checks that Gordon Reid is happy enough with how the scrum is going.
