Liffey Celtics claim league title

COURTYARD Liffey Celtics were crowned women’s Super League regular-season champions after they overcame IT Carlow Basketball 71-48 as the men’s title was forced to go to a play-off.

The win ensures that Liffey are safely clear at the top of the table having suffered just two losses so far this season and though they still have to meet Pyrobel Killester on Wednesday evening.

However in the men’s Super League the regular season champions were not decided as both UCD Marian and Pyrobel Killester won all of their remaining games to see them tied with 17 wins and five losses each at the top of the table.

This means that the two sides will meet for the fourth time this season in a play-off final later this week in a winner-takes-all Dublin derby. Killester last night forced the play-off following their 87-47 victory over Eanna to follow up Saturday’s 102-79 win over DCU Saints.

Despite claiming a 74-58 victory over Belfast Star at home on Saturday, Kieran Donaghy’s Tralee Warriors missed out on a play-off.

It was the similar story for Templeogue after their 86-76 win over Griffith Thunder Swords in the ALSAA.

Meanwhile, County Kerry will boast two teams in next season’s Super League after Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin were crowned Men’s Division 1 champions on Saturday after a 90-68 point win over Fr Mathews in Cork.
