Mourinho hits back at ‘worst manager in Premier League history’ De Boer

- James Ducker

JOSE MOURINHO has described Frank de Boer “the worst manager in the history of the Premier League” after the Dutchman criticised his handling of Marcus Rashford.

De Boer said, after Rashford’s two goals in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Liverpool, it was a “pity” Mourinho was the England striker’s manager at Manchester United because his talent demanded more playing time than the Portuguese was prepared to give him.

But Mourinho – under whom Rashford has made more appearances than any other United player – responded with a humiliating put-down of De Boer’s failed spell at Crystal Palace.

De Boer was sacked after 77 days in charge at Selhurst Park last September following four successive league defeats in which his side failed to score.

“I read some quote from the worst manager in the history of the Premier League, Frank de Boer,” Mourinho said.

“What he was saying was it was not good for Marcus to have a coach like me, because the most important thing for me is to win. But if Marcus was coached by Frank, he would lose, because he lost every game.

“But I try to give the best to the kid. If you go to his numbers and see how many matches he played with me last season and this, I would say probably he’s in the top five players.”

Mourinho’s stinging comment came in response to a question that did not even reference De Boer, only whether Rashford would retain his starting berth against Sevilla. The United manager did not actually address that question. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
