Bloomfield reincarnated once more for modern times

BLOOMFIELD House in Donnybrook, which was built in the 1790s for an MP, was once home to Dr Robert Emmet, the father of the Irish nationalist who led a rebellion against British rule in 1803.

The Emmet family added its own touches to the property, most notably creating a large room to the right of the entrance hall, reflecting the contemporary fashion for large ballrooms.

Bloomfield House has seen many incarnations since then, including a 193-year stint as a mental health facility founded by the Quakers.

Edward Homes has since acquired the protected structure and, with the help of Paul Tyndall Architects, has restored the Georgian facade of the property and remodelled its adjoining buildings Northfield and Westfield to accommodate 12 high-end apartments in a scheme called Bloomfield.

Two and three-bed apartments, which were fitted out with interiors from Knightsbridge-based Taylor Howes, were released last weekend, and eight are still for sale. Bloomfield House, now a four-bedroom home spanning 4,200 sq ft, will go on the market later this month.

Prices for the apartments start at €1m and sizes range from 1,001 sq ft to 1,647 sq ft.

During the restoration, original features such as high ceilings, ornate coving, and sash window casements were retained.

The apartments were also fitted with Siematic kitchens, bespoke wardrobes, and individually-designed bathrooms with inbuilt storage.

Each unit has its own terrace or balcony, and access to underground parking and private landscaped communal gardens with a water feature.
